life in an artisanal world

The arts and crafts on this watchlist are endangered. Most of these crafts once enjoyed thriving numbers of practitioners. Some were even sustainable industries. Today, most are sub or sub-subcultures with varying degrees of membership and cultural dispersal. Recognizing that with time our needs and values shift does not necessitate that once vibrant crafts be resigned to history.

Preserving craft practices through documentation is not enough. Craft must be made. Techniques must be passed on to people who will apply them, not simply study them. Without active makers and a thriving subculture to sustain it, a craft will die.
